AI Is Driving a New Era of Data Center Power Demand
Global demand for data center power and placing new pressure on energy infrastructure, due to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.
According to a recent Gartner news report, worldwide data center electricity consumption is projected to increase 26% in 2026, reaching approximately 565 terawatt-hours (TWh), up from 447 TWh in 2025. Global data center power demand is also expected to reach 132 gigawatts (GW) in 2026 and could climb to approximately 290 GW by 2030.
AI-optimized servers are a major driver of this growth. Gartner estimates they will account for 31% of total data center electricity consumption in 2026, with their power consumption expected to surpass conventional servers in 2027. By 2030, total data center electricity consumption could exceed 1,200 TWh worldwide.
The projections highlight a growing challenge for the AI economy, with computing capacity increasingly depends on access to reliable power.
Gartner cautions that existing grid supply may be insufficient to support future data center development, increasing the importance of securing grid access, improving energy efficiency, and investing in technologies such as advanced cooling and distributed computing.
For developers, operators, and investors, the trend reinforces the need to consider energy availability, resilience, and infrastructure capacity as fundamental components of future data center and AI development.
