Baltimore High School Students Delve into Clean Energy at Constellation’s Weeklong UMBC Camp
The Youth Energy Summit hosted by Constellation Energy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), which brought together nearly 70 high school students from across the nation. The weeklong camp for students focused on various aspects of climate, environment, and STEM, particularly renewable energy, energy efficiency, and microgrids.
Students participated in hands-on activities like designing energy-efficient model homes and visited energy sites such as the Conowingo hydroelectric dam and the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center. The summit aimed to spark students’ interest in science and engineering careers by exposing them to real-world energy applications and interactive learning experiences.
Carrie Stockwell, Constellation’s Director of Philanthropy, emphasized the students’ diverse interests and the program’s goal to inspire and support them in pursuing careers in energy.
The summit also included student activities like developing climate action plans and engaging in mock senate hearings, fostering educational and practical skills.
Participants, like Shardul Joshi and Oluwacamilore Omocariola, expressed enthusiasm about the program and its benefits in understanding environmental science and sustainability. The summit concluded with students receiving certificates of completion and encouragement to apply for next year’s program, with applications opening in early 2025.
