Natural Gas Microgrids: A Solution for Data Centers Awaiting Nuclear Power
Natural gas is becoming a crucial power source for data centers, with microgrid technology offering a solution to meet their growing energy demands. Enchanted Rock, a supplier of natural gas microgrids, views this technology as a temporary solution until modular nuclear reactors become viable in 5-10 years.
Microgrids powered by natural gas can either fully support or supplement traditional power grids, helping manage peak demand and accommodate fluctuating AI workloads.
Enchanted Rock operates around 300 microgrids and is expanding its projects, including one for a Microsoft data center. Natural gas is preferred over diesel and batteries due to lower emissions and faster setup times.
Natural gas is viewed as a transitional solution until nuclear power becomes more practical.
Though some view it as having limited environmental impacts and availability issues, it offers a quicker and more flexible alternative to traditional electrical grids.
